Symbolism is a very strong element that we can all use on an every day-to-day basis.

We can all really undermine what a symbol can really do for our mental health.

Symbols are ideas. They are the prime culprit to our manifestations that we create in our minds. They are keys to our emotions. They can be the strongest of influences in our lives.

A symbol can be a group of words, an object, or even a photograph.

A single sentence can steer your way of thinking dramatically just by seeing it every single day.

For instance, I recently began writing my own ‘memes’ and placed them on my lock screen on my phone. This way, I continue to visualize what I desire to achieve every time I pick up my phone.

This is my way of fighting against the other voice - my depression.

I’ve been fighting for things I believe in. I take great pride in those things. My depression is and always will be something I will battle every single day. It's the other voice. It doesn't really go away unless you find a way to train your mind to shut it the fuck up.

So when I read, “ Follow your fucking heart “ every day, this allows me to continue a mindset that I created for myself that also didn't come from anyone else. I have my own goals that I wish to see out. I intend to meet those goals.

This is an easy example of visualization.

All too many times we let society shape the way we think and feel and it leads to dreams that end way too quickly. Doubt can come into play very fast.

This is also an example of depression.

Our own ideas are the most powerful assets we have. It’s our imagination. Why wouldn’t you want to use your own ideas? Weilding and holding onto our own ideas are the keys to our successes.

Creating phone backgrounds sets a tone for my own aspirations - self-manifested affirmations. I'm not saying follow this idea. But this is how I use words as symbolism to help create what I am visualizing.

“I create the world I want.”

You can use words any way you wish. Wether it's a phone background, a book you read at night, the tattoo you want on your arm, or the texts you keep in your phone.

So what about objects? Things we choose to keep?

I think most of us are collectors of habit. We all keep personal, priceless possessions, yeah?

How can objects affect our way of thinking?

Take a piece of jewelry, or clothing item someone gifted you for example. The object you are thinking of is essentially a key to your memories. In that moment, whenever you gaze upon such items, you can access memories with ease.

It usually happens unintentionally. Quite forcibly actually.

That item represents a symbol. It either represents a joyful or even sometimes an unpleasant experience/memory you once had.

Of course, choosing to keep the right objects around in your life can be quite beneficial.

A joyful memory can fill up your heart and deliver powerful emotions, if it is considered a 'healthy' symbol.

What if you choose to keep the wrong objects around in your life? Ones that bring back painful experiences? An 'unhealthy' symbol.

No matter the symbolism of the object, your brain is already programmed and forced to replay whatever memory it possesses.

I could talk all day about the items I’ve kept around for years that involved the women I’ve dated in the past. Things I’ve kept for way longer than I needed to.

This was not healthy. Especially when really, those objects represented something that didn’t even work out.

Personally, I held onto things I thought I valued of course. Yet, those objects only really reminded me of the pain I felt - which ultimately only led to re-occurring depressive states.

Photographs are one pf the the best examples of symbolism.

We all use photographs as a form to express, feel and re-live experiences in our own realities. This should really be self explanatory. So there's no need to really elaborate.

Keeping old photos with people that didn't quite make it to where you are today, probably isn't the best idea. Keeping those photos archived on your instagram or facebook, or even hidden away in your email could mean you are still holding on.

Let go.

We are so easily influenced by the symbols we choose to keep in our possession. Letting go of things, cherished items, is hard. At least it can be, if you choose it to be.

Let go of symbols that are not serving you. Throw away the keys that unlock painful experiences that influence you to re-live depressive states. Go back and recycle things that are not helping you move forward because if you don't, you will only invite anxiety back into your life.

This is only a mere suggestion of course. This isn't meant to bring you a sense of aggression. In good faith, I believe keeping the right symbols in your life will only inspire you to keep moving forward if you are someone that cannot seem to escape malicious thoughts.

Love yourself. Be brave.

Try not to surround yourself with harmful symbols of grief, a poor attitude or negative mindsets.

It could be an old receipt.

A t-shirt.

A bracelet.

A note.

That stupid meme in your camera roll.

Your ex's hair tie.

Your ex's hoodie.

Keep the good things. The symbols that lift you up. It doesn't have to be about relationships. It could be in regards to anything.

Discard the symbols that bring you down and then create new ones. Or at least sell them. Get your monies worth at least.

When you keep the right symbols around, I promise you that you will notice a significant difference in your life.

It's made a difference in mine. I promise.

With love.
